My story

Background:

Part of being a Christian is that we can tell our story to others. This is the story of how we became a Christian, and what it means for us to be a Christian.

Preparing to tell our story helps us make our own thinking clear and helps us to be always prepared to give an answer to everybody who asks you to give a reason for the hope you have (1Peter 3:15)

This is part of my assignment for the membership class. By putting it onto my blog, I view it as an important personal story and also to testify for His presence in my life. Being a Christian is one of the best event that had ever happened to me :)

I did not grow up in a Christian family. My family members are Buddhists and my mother is a devout Buddhist. When I was young, I had always been taught the Buddhist traditions and I thought that I would also become a devout Buddhist. I could not understand why Christians do not tolerate any other religions, and I thought that it was wrong to be so “intolerant”.

When I knew my boyfriend, Felix (currently fiancĂ©) who is a Christian, I thought that it is “alright” for me to remain a non-believer, as long as I do not interfere with his worship and religious affairs. When Felix brought me to church, it was just to “fulfil his wish” and I would attend Sunday morning service every alternate week. It was a chore and I dreaded waking up early on Sundays which I usually slept in. I complained. However, I still felt obliged to attend every alternate week.

After a couple of months of grudging Sunday mornings, I felt that I begin to agree with the sermons which often strike a chord in me. I started going to church every week and gradually, I believe in God. One year after attending church, I said the sinner’s prayer after a sermon on 6 June 2009. My pastor later revealed to me that Felix and he prayed for my salvation the night before. When I heard that, I felt that God is a true and living God.

After a few more months of worship in that church, Felix and I decided to visit ORPC in February 2010. We liked the messages from the sermons and also the Presbyterian setting (our previous church is a Charismatic one). We attended Christianity Explained (CE) course too and it has reaffirmed my faith. I feel I am better able to defend my faith and spread the good news to my friends and family who are non-believers. The abundance of reading materials from CE has also answered some of the uncertainty I had. We grew to like ORPC and its strong adherence to the bible. We look forward to continue to walk the faith and serve God in ORPC.
